What happened
Awe is now a well-defined category in emotion research, distinct from related feelings like surprise, wonder or fear. Psychologist Dacher Keltner, at the University of California, Berkeley, and philosopher Jonathan Haidt proposed an influential definition in a 2003 paper: awe arises from an encounter with something that feels vast — in size, scope, complexity, ability or meaning — that doesn’t fit comfortably into a person’s existing mental categories, requiring what they called “accommodation,” a shift in how the mind is organized to take it in.
A night sky is one of the most reliable triggers researchers use in awe studies, alongside things like tall trees, mountain vistas, large architecture and footage of nature or space. It works because it supplies both halves of Keltner and Haidt’s definition at once: genuine physical vastness, and something that doesn’t reduce easily to a familiar, graspable scale.
A related and frequently cited 2012 study by Paul Piff, working with Keltner at Berkeley, found that people who experienced awe — in that study, by standing among a grove of very tall trees — subsequently described themselves in smaller, less self-important terms, and behaved slightly more generously in a follow-up task, compared with a control group that experienced a less awe-inducing scene. Researchers named this the “small self” effect.
What the evidence supports
The core awe research — that vastness plus difficulty categorizing it produces a distinct emotional signature — has been replicated across multiple labs using different induction methods: nature footage, live outdoor settings, recalled memories of awe, even VR simulations. That breadth of method is one reason awe is now treated as a legitimate, separate category in affective science rather than just a poetic label for strong wonder.
The “small self” and generosity findings are more mixed. Piff and Keltner’s original study has been cited widely, but subsequent replication attempts on the generosity link specifically have produced smaller or less consistent effects than the original, which is a common pattern across social psychology as fields have pushed for larger, pre-registered replications in the past decade. The core self-shrinking feeling itself — people describing themselves as smaller or less central after an awe experience — replicates more reliably than the downstream behavioral effects on generosity.
Separately, astronauts who have viewed Earth from orbit or the Moon frequently describe an intense variant of this experience, termed the “overview effect” by writer Frank White in 1987 after interviewing multiple astronauts. It is treated in the research literature as a real and consistently reported phenomenon, though it rests on first-person testimony from a necessarily small population rather than controlled experiment.
How the story is being framed
Inside affective science, one perspective treats awe primarily as a social emotion — its main function, on this view, is binding individuals into groups by temporarily muting self-interest, which is why collective rituals, religious architecture and shared skywatching so often feature vastness deliberately.
A second perspective, more evolutionary in framing, treats awe as primarily about updating mental models — a response tuned to help people process genuinely new, category-breaking information quickly, with the social and generosity effects as a secondary byproduct rather than the main point.
A third, more skeptical position inside psychology cautions against over-claiming: awe is real and measurable, but popular science writing has sometimes stretched the “small self” finding into broader wellness claims — that awe reliably makes people kinder, healthier or less anxious in a lasting way — that go beyond what the more mixed replication evidence currently supports.
The background
Interest in awe as a research subject grew alongside the broader rise of positive psychology in the early 2000s, which shifted some academic attention from disorders and negative states toward specific positive emotions worth studying in their own right — curiosity, gratitude, flow and awe among them. Before that, awe had mostly been treated as a subject for philosophy, religion and aesthetics rather than experimental psychology.
What the research doesn’t settle is whether modern life has measurably reduced how often people encounter awe-inducing stimuli — light pollution has made a genuinely dark, star-filled sky unavailable to a large share of people who live near cities, which is a documented fact of astronomy and infrastructure, though its effect on population-level awe exposure over time has not itself been rigorously measured.
The deeper story
The question awe research keeps circling, without quite naming it this way, is: what is it good for, feeling small?
Psalm 8 asks almost exactly that, in front of the same sky: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them?” The psalm doesn’t treat smallness as a bad answer to arrive at. It sits with the disproportion — a person, looking up at something too vast to hold in the mind at once — and lets that be the point, rather than something to resolve or explain away.
That’s a strange kind of comfort by ordinary standards, and it lines up oddly well with what the “small self” researchers keep finding almost a century of psychology later: that feeling smaller than your own concerns, briefly and on purpose, is not the same thing as feeling diminished. For a few minutes under a dark sky, both the psalm and the lab data are describing the same trade — a self that shrinks a little, and seems to breathe easier for it.
